CORRALITOS — A birthday celebration took took a tragic turn this weekend, leaving one man dead, another on life support and third arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Live Oak resident Peter Phath was killed in a collision early Sunday on Freedom Boulevard when his friend, celebrating his 18th birthday, veered his 1997 Dodge Neon into oncoming traffic and hit a car.

The driver of the 1997 Dodge Neon, Lorenzo Silva of Watsonville, suffered a broken leg, and has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, the California Highway Patrol said Monday. He turned 18 Sunday.

A third person in the Neon, 16-year-old Ricky Nhem of Capitola, suffered head trauma and is on life support at Dominican Hospital, according to his father, John Nhem.

The two people in the 2002 BMW that the Neon struck, a 50-year-old woman and her 47-year-old passenger, both of Corralitos, were uninjured in the 12:20 a.m. collision.

At Vista Community School in Santa Cruz, where Phath was known as a hard-working student, two candles were placed in the front office next to pictures of Phath.

He was attending the alternative school to make up credits before returning to Soquel High to graduate in June, his family said.

Phath was a week away from celebrating his own 18th birthday.
