A Bohemia teen drag racing along busy Montauk Highway in Oakdale died after his Nissan Maxima slammed into a utility pole, police said yesterday.
Joseph Digirolamo, 17, of Walnut Ave., was trying to overtake another sedan on the highway's eastbound lane when he lost control of his car about 9p.m.

"The two cars appeared to be racing eastbound when they came across another car in traffic," Suffolk County Police Detective Lt. Edward Reilly.

"In trying to avoid it, Mr. Digirolamo's car passed on the right, lost control and left the roadway."

The 1999 Maxima struck a telephone pole about 500 feet east of Vanderbilt Blvd., on the south side of Montauk Highway.

The smashed Nissan came to rest on its side in front of a hardware store. Digirolamo was rushed to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead.

The vehicle was impounded for safety checks as the investigation continues, said police, who are still searching for the other car.

Numerous witnesses told investigators Digirolamo was racing a dark-colored sedan.
