An 18-year-old Marine died Monday morning in a car crash in Midtown.

James S. Mueller was driving a 1999 Saturn east on Broadway near Columbus Boulevard when he veered into the median and crashed into a palm tree around 7 a.m., said Sgt. Mark Robinson, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

The teen was not wearing his seat belt, he said, and investigators speculated that his attention may have been diverted from traffic.
Several people stopped to help, but the teen died on the way to a hospital, Robinson said.

Mueller graduated from Cienega High School in May and enlisted in the Marine Corps "because he thought it was the right thing to do," said his father, Kurt Mueller.

"He was excited and proud to be a Marine," he said. "He was really positive about what he was doing."

Mueller had been at boot camp from August to November and was home between training assignments, working with a local recruiter's office, his father said. He was to go to Oklahoma to complete training.

He was an upbeat and active teen and had been involved in a church youth group and was a student athletic trainer in high school, his father said.
