MONROE — A 16-year-old Monroe girl died early yesterday in a one-vehicle accident.

Heather Newkirk was southbound on LaPlaisance Road around 12:35 a.m. when her car went left of center, Monroe County sheriff’s deputies said.

The car reached the east shoulder and then veered back across the road and went into a ditch before overturning and landing on its roof.

Ms. Newkirk, who was not wearing a safety belt, was thrown from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.
