Thanh Nguyen, 17 -- Car Accident

The Contra Costa County coroner's office identified a 17-year-old boy who died early Sunday from injuries caused by a traffic accident as Thanh Nguyen of Stockton.

Nguyen was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek following a crash on the Altamont Pass, east of Livermore, at 10:53 p.m. Saturday.

The California Highway Patrol said Thanh was driving fast east on Interstate 580 when the car veered into a left lane, striking a 2000 Nissan sport utility vehicle. Thanh's 1992 Acura then veered right and rolled down an embankment.

Thanh's three teenage passengers and a 36-year-old passenger in the Nissan were treated at different hospitals for minor to moderate injuries, according to CHP and hospital officials.
