Two students from Japan were identified Tuesday as the victims of a fatal car crash early Sunday.

Masatoshi Nomura, 20, and Satoru Abe, 16, were passengers in a compact car heading southbound on Alhambra Avenue just before 2 a.m., police said.

The driver, a 20-year-old Pleasant Hill woman, was following a friend who made a quick left turn on John Muir Road. When the car carrying the students also turned left, it was broadsided by a northbound sport utility vehicle, police said.

Abe was pronounced dead at the scene, while Nomura died later Sunday at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

Police said alcohol was apparently not a factor in the collision, which remains under investigation.
